    Hours Worked and Breaks

    The number of hours worked each week is 36.5

    Monday – Thursday: 8.00am – 4.30pm

    Friday: 8.00am – 12.30pm

    The lunch period is of 30 minutes duration as per each individual’s timetable.

    There is a 15 minute rest break provided each morning Monday – Friday and a 15 minute rest break provided during the afternoon with the exception of Friday when the centre closes early.

    Timekeeping

    Apprentices no matter what year they are in need to clock/sign in and out every day. Weekly time in attendance records are collated, recorded and sent to your employer, this will affect timesheets/pay. In addition due to breaches of health and safety every students regardless of year needs to clock/sign in

    If an apprentice arrives at the centre after 8.00am they should clock in as usual, then report to their tutor who will decide if they can work that particular shift or not.  If it is decided by their tutor that the apprentice does not have a good enough reason for being late they will refer the apprentice to the Centre Operations Manager (or a deputy) who may exclude the learner from working a particular shift.

    You must arrive at the centre in good time to prepare yourself for the day’s activities and apprentices will be expected to be ready to start the working day at 8.00am at their sections or in the classrooms.

    Apprentices will not clock out of the Training Centre before 4.30pm Monday – Thursday or 12:30pm Friday, unless they have prior permission from their employer or the Centre Manager.

    Holidays

    Holidays should be agreed with your employer prior to making a holiday request.  Holidays can only be taken with the agreement of the Centre Operations Managers or their deputy or if discussed at interview and will only be granted during term time in exceptional circumstances. No formal holiday arrangements should be made without approval from Make UK and your employer.

    Proof of authorisation from your company will be required before the holiday is granted.

    Absence

    Illness - Short Term

    If apprentices are ill from the Centre they must contact the Centre reception on 0121 331 3930 as early as possible after 7.45am, but before 8.30am, on EACH DAY of absence. Apprentices should also notify their employer.

    On return to the Centre following illness apprentices must complete a Self-Certification Form obtainable from their employer.

    If sickness persists for 6 consecutive days (including weekends) then the learner must obtain a doctor’s note prior to returning to the Centre.

    If apprentices have a medical appointment then they must complete an Advanced Authorised Absence Form obtained from their tutor or reception

    Apprentices who have, or who are diagnosed with, an illness during their qualifying period that may affect their performance or endanger them during the operation of machinery should notify the H&S Officer as soon as possible. Failure to declare an illness of this nature to MakeUK will be dealt with as gross misconduct and may lead to the termination of your contract.

    Under our duty of common care, MAKE UK is obligated to share information with your employer.

    Advanced Authorised Absence during working hours

    Apprentices having good reason for leaving the Centre during working hours must first obtain permission from their tutor  Having received permission learners must clock out and clock in on return to the Training Centre.

    An Advanced Authorised Absence form must be completed to ensure accurate attendance records are maintained.

    Unauthorised Absence

    Unauthorised absence is absence that has not previously been authorised and for which no paperwork or telephone call has been received.

    In the case of any unauthorised absence the learner will have to report to the customer liaison officer on return to the centre and after clocking in. Apprentices are required to follow their employer’s absence procedure.

    Episodes of unauthorised absence may result in appropriate disciplinary action being taken under the Code of Conduct and Exclusion Policy.
